Valorn is the largest known continent in the world of Trinald. Despite its size, Valorn does not have a large population, mostly due to a war several generations ago that killed off nearly 80% of the inhabitants. Once a land of several powerful kingdoms, Valorn is now nothing more than a series of losely connected towns and cities. Some progress has been made of late in uniting the land, with the reappearance of the castle Laeleldan and the High King, but Valorn is still a place one can travel through and not see another mortal soul for miles upon miles.

Valorn is terrorized by the Demon Lord, Balthazar, and his hordes of monstrous creations. Balthazar is the lone survivor of a race of ancient, dark beings, and his intent is clearly the transformation of Valorn and perhaps eventually all of Trinald into a dark domain of evil.

Towns and Areas of Valorn

Dundee: A Town of New Beginnings
Dundee is a small town in the western half of Valorn. It lies within the southern plain, and borders the dark forest of the west. Dundee is ruled by a mayor. The mayor serves for life, and passes his title down to his oldest child. The current ruling family is kind, if a bit aristocratic.

Commerce is very much alive in Dundee. It is primarily an agricultural center, and traders can often be seen hauling grain on the forest path to Milltown. Besides the substantial income from farming, Dundee makes a healthy profit selling equipment to young adventurers, who often train in the surrounding plains and swamp. Dundee has focused much of their public areas to providing hospitality to those new to Valorn.

Dundee was much larger in earlier times. Rabid animal attacks decimated the population in the northern half of the town, and few have settled back in that area. Other residents left when the Order of the Iron Knights started to disband. IRN's castle now sits almost abandoned near Dundee's northern border. Recently, citizens have complained of strange smells coming from the sewers, and have glimpsed gigantic rats the size of large dogs. What this all means for the small town is unknown…

Southern Plains
Dundee is located in the northwest part of a broad, sweeping plain. Although many parts have been cleared out and fenced off for farming, much of the plain remains wild and home to many beasts. A gigantic tree towers over the southwest corner, and some Dundee children claim to have seen strange tiny men near that area. Also impressive is a large building made entirely of glass, which houses one of the finest inns Valorn has ever seen. South of the plain is the beach and, eventually, the ocean.

The Dark Forest of the West
The dark forest on the western half of Valorn lies directly between Dundee and Milltown. The forest is home to fierce, rabid, diseased creatures, as well as a well-armed group of bandits. Most of the forest is very dangerous, but the path that has been cleared between Milltown and Dundee is fairly safe to travel for those somewhat experienced with a sword. Recently, reports of fierce ogres in the forest have begun to be heard in the Inns of the area.

Milltown: Industrial Center of Valorn
Milltown is named for the seven great mills that churn away at the east end of town, processing wood from the dark forest to the south. Milltown is a progressive place, run by a council of citizens that meets in the room above the town inn once every month.

About ten years ago, Milltown built sturdy walls on both the northern and southern edges of town. This has allowed them to hold back the desert and forest creatures that used to prey upon the citizenry. Because of this, citizens of less safe regions have begun to flock to Milltown, creating an overabundance of merchants and other townsfolk. Thankfully, the food supply from Dundee to the south continues to exceed need.

Those looking for battle around Milltown can venture north, south, or west. The forest to the south is a constant battleground, as citizen soldiers from both Dundee and Milltown attempt to cleanse the woods of rabid animals and forest bandits. The desert to the north is home to fearsome creatures… and rumors of gangs of gigantic demons in the dunes are sometimes heard. The area west of town used to be farmland, but is now home to some sort of evil haunting presence.

The Endless Desert
The Endless Desert is a huge, hot, desolate area north of Milltown. The area is largely unknown, and is famous for swallowing entire bands of well-equipped adventurers. Rumors abound of a secret tomb, and of a sparkling oasis. Ryndall is often seen on the horizon while travelling here, but few people claim to have ever been able to actually make it to the city.

Western Mountains
The large range of mountains to the west of the Endless Desert serves to divide Caernivale from the rest of Valorn. A path exists through the mountains, but fierce beasts and tribes of unfriendly Centaurs kill all those who attempt to pass.

Caernivale: Overlooking the Ocean
Caernivale may be one of the strangest sights an adventurer will ever see. The entire town is built on large wooden platforms, which are balanced on poles that extend at least one-hundred feet down to the beach below. Entrance to the town can only be made by crossing the drawbridge from the cliff that towers over the beach at Caernivale's elevation.

The people of Caernivale are the most guarded in all of Valorn... which explains why they live in an unreachable town on the far side of a gigantic mountain range. Most visitors who do manage to make the trip are disappointed to find that a majority of the town is closed off to outsiders. A capable and sneaky rogue, though, could probably find a way around the town's security measures. For most citizens of Valorn, the closest they will ever get to Caernivale is to hear the distant but daily explosion of the town's enormous cannon, which is mostly used as a fast mode of transportation.

Ryndall: City of Wonder
Ryndall is a magical city which exists on some other plain of existence. The only ways to reach the city are by use of magics. Nevertheless, the city is "somewhere" in the desert north of Milltown, on the western half of Valorn.

If there is a center of power for Valorn, it is most likely Ryndall. The city is home to the most powerful enchanters in the land, and produces some of the most feared weaponry. There is a rift between the magic-using enchanters and the minority population of non-magic warriors and rogues, but no violence has ever erupted, as both factions tend to keep to their own parts of the city.

Ryndall is ruled by a powerful and mysterious group of Enchanters. There is not even a known name for this group, although some call them "The Order" or "The Council". The one member of the group who interacts with the citizenry, Azeraphel, will give little information about his group or himself. It is not even known if Azeraphel is the head of the group, or merely a messenger. Regardless, he is the voice of the most dangerous rulers in Valorn, and is listened to very carefully.

The Wall
A relic of the Golden Age when great kingdoms covered the land, The Wall served the Kingdom of the East as a deterrent against the Kingdom of the West. Despite hundreds of years of neglect, The Wall continues to divide the land in two. It towers nearly a hundred feet in the air, and is over forty feet thick at its strongest points. Stories persist from the Golden Age telling of passageways running through the wall. Unfortunately, few can successfully make the journey through the desert to see if the stories are true.

The Black Wastelands
The Black Wastelands cover an area almost equal to the size of the Endless Desert. In combination with The Wall, the Wastelands have served to keep the eastern and western halves of Valorn almost completely separated for generations. The Wastelands are a result of a massive mystical battle that occurred sometime toward the end of the Golden Age. The destruction is so horrific and massive that it is almost assured that the battle had something to do with the downfall of the great kingdoms. The area is home to horribly disfigured creatures and mutants, and is considered one of the least safe (and desirable) areas in all of Valorn.

Branishor: The Sophisticated City
Branishor is a glittering white pearl on the coast of the gulf that extends into the heart of Valorn. As the only known city to have survived the fall of the great kingdoms nearly four-hundred years ago, Branishor represents the last center of the old culture. Both artists and clerics abound here, as the city houses many galleries, as well as the only surviving Great Temple.

Branishor is ruled by the Clerics. Generally, they are known as fair and just rulers, although taxes to support the temple are quite high. Branishor is largely self sufficient. They grow their own crops in the fields to the north, and can get plenty of wood and game from the woods to the east. Branishor also sends constant shipments of supplies to Fartown, although not all of them manage to get through.

Eastern Mountains
The Eastern Mountains connect the main of Valorn with the far-eastern areas of Verthedge Forest and the Tall Grasslands. The mountain paths are sometimes treacherous here, and many giant beasts and wild centaurs roam the canyons and cliffs.
Altitan: Mountain Retreat
Altitan is the only city in Valorn not run by humans. It is home to a race of Rock Giants, who are plenty happy to host little fleshies and their seemingly endless purses of platinum. The Rock Giants (their actual name is unpronounceable, so nobody tries) are excellent weapon and armorsmiths, and somehow forge solid rock into wearable items that are just slightly heavier than similar items made of metal.

The culture of the Rock Giants is something of a mystery, and many strange things can be found in their mountain home. Their love of drink, though, gives them something of a mutual understanding with their little fleshy friends from the flatlands, and the Altitan Inns are commonly packed with both rock and man. The only thing that keeps the mountain town from being a complete joy is the fortress of Balthazar, which can be seen towering over the forest in the valley below.

Verthedge Forest
Verthedge is a forest full of subtle magic. Everything here seems just a bit larger than it should naturally be. The plants themselves seem to be a little bit hungrier for human flesh than they ought to naturally be as well. Verthedge is the last line of natural beauty available before traversing north toward Balthazar's lair.
Tall Grasslands
The Tall Grasslands are an extension of the oversized Verthedge forest. Here, grass grows so high that it is nearly impossible to see anything just a few feet in front of where you are standing. Luckily, the people of Fartown have mowed a few paths through the foliage to allow trade to their humble city. Beware of beasts that like to hide in the exceptionally tall grass waiting for prey to stumble by.
Fartown: The Edge of Civilization
Fartown is surrounded by a giant wall of woven grass. In fact, many of their products... plates, clothing, armor, and houses... are made of woven or processed grass from the Tall Grasslands. Fartown is, basically, a frontier fort with a few hardy inhabitants. Only the strongest of adventurers would call a place like Fartown `home`.
The Dead Zone
North of Verthedge Forest, across a field of rotting corpses, lies an area known only as The Dead Zone. It is here that Balthazar sits on his throne of bones and plans between raids and random killings... and it is here that the Demon Lord will be defeated eventually, if such a thing is even possible. Little else is known about this place, as nobody on record has returned from there alive.

Notable Citizens of Valorn

Cordelia, High Queen of Valorn
Raised and trained by the Iron Knights in secrecy, Cordelia stepped forward as heir to the throne because King Deek had gone missing. Young but determined, already she has endeared herself to the people of Valorn with her warmth and by her devotion to the realm's welfare. She resides now in Caer Laleldan, and comes out among the people when she can.

Deek The Powerful, former High King of Valorn
Once thought to be a refugee from a far-off land, Deek rediscovered his family's past when he began to explore Valorn. An ancestor of one of the ancient Kings of the Golden Age, Deek claimed his family's throne with the blessings of the gods. His leadership raised the hopes of the people of Valorn during a dark time following the invasion of Ryndall by Balthazar and his demons. During Deek's reign, Ryndall was freed from its demon occupiers. Other victories were won, and it looked like Deek's reign might last a lifetime. But Deek went missing, and Valorn despaired of having another wear to the Crown, until it was revealed that Iron Knight Cordelia was daughter and heir to Deek. Deek's body was found and he was interred near Caer Laleldan.

High Lord Azeraphel, Archmage of Ryndall
Azeraphel is an exalted High Lord, and is the current Archmage of Ryndall. He is a helpful character, if a bit stuffy at times. He is almost all-powerful, and doesn't mind letting everybody he meets know it. He has some tie to the mysterious group of magic users that rule over Ryndall and influence much of the rest of Valorn, but nobody knows quite what his relation to that group is. He may be their leader, or merely a messenger. Regardless, he can be a very powerful ally if you get on his good side, and a very dangerous enemy to those who earn his disfavor.

High Cleric Elijah The Holy (now deceased)
Elijah was the High Cleric, ruler of Branishor, and spiritual leader of all of Valorn. He made his home in the large temple located in the city of Branishor. He was a very kind man, but was kept busy by the mysterious disappearances that his order of clerics had been suffering. He tried to step up recruitment of clerics, and was once seen around town healing and helping adventurers in need, or searching for the latest missing cleric. Elijah fell prey to a failing heart after an attack of Balthazar's.

T'yandra Stallheart The Holy
T'yandra is an experienced healer as well as a warrior. While Elijah prefers teaching peace in academic settings, T'yandra excels at field medicine and battle. Due to her "hands on" style, she has become an extremely popular heroine to the people of Valorn. She was chief advisor of the previous High Cleric, Elijah and is in contention for the position.

Interim High Cleric Shamson the Holy
Shamson is an experienced healer as well as a cleric. He has been a large, familiar figure in the Milltown temple for years and rarely stirred from it. He currently holds the interim position of High Cleric and is in contention for the position permanently.

Iron Knight Gunthield
Gunthield is an elder within the Iron Knights, an Order tasked with protecting the royal line of Valorn. For many marcs people were convinced there were just a few scattered aging knights left... in fact, only three were known to exist. Recently, however, the people of Valorn have discovered that the Iron Knights were merely rebuilding and are ready to rejoin the fight against Balthazar.

Gunthield spends his time helping where he can in the fight against the demons, but he is just one legendary hero in a land overflowing with monsters. His tired visage and deliberate speech are well known in Valorn.

Other major Iron Knights include Macleon, an expert swordsman and the Iron Knights recruiter, Pestus in Dundee, Arturion, a master smith, and High Queen Cordelia. Since the Iron Knights emerged from secrecy, they began recruiting new members. First among them was Islander the Demon Slayer who was known also as the Blademaster.

Shaerih
A rogue of exquisite taste, cunning and beauty, Shaerih is the most naturally skilled rogue in all Valorn. Her incredible prowess lets her move almost invisibly among the citizenry of even the most densely populated towns, and her lithe figure and sharp intelligence and wit has been the bane of many a man who sought to win her but found themselves at her mercy instead. This combination of skill and charisma has provided Shaerih with a fairly sizeable fortune, the exact extent of which is unknown.

Shaerih is not a public figure, a leader, or a political force in Valorn, but she is widely respected because of her abilities and knowledge. She has the somewhat odd distinction of being both the most well-known rogue in all of Valorn, as well as the least seen.

Demon Lord Balthazar
Not much is known about Balthazar, just that he is more than a man now, and is rumored to be able to command demons. It is also rumored that he has lived for thousands of years and caused the downfall of the Golden Age and the two great kingdoms of Valorn nearly four-hundred years ago. Before he could seize full control of Valorn, though, it is said that the rulers of Ryndall managed to bind him to the forest in the east. He remains there to this day, assuming the tyrant is still alive.

Ancient Valorian mythology tells of a continent that exists on some other plain of existence. This is said to be N'rolav, the Dark Valorn, where massive Demons run rampant, and an evil presence rules. The idea that Balthazar is somehow in touch with, or even possessed by, this mythological dark power has gained a following among the more paranoid of Valorn's population. What else can explain his near impossible powers? And, more importantly, does this dark mirror world exist?

Recently, adventurers have reported that Balthazar once again roams the towns and wilds of Valorn. The rulers of Ryndall are strangely silent on this matter, despite proof of several assaults on the towns of Valorn by Balthazar's demon hordes. The mighty Demon Lord has even taken to kidnapping adventurers for his own evil pleasures, playing with them like rats in his fortress maze. Still, something must be keeping the dark being at bay. If he had his full power available to him, would he not simply destroy the unprepared population of Valorn?

There is much popular lore about the Demon Lord and his menacing antics. In fact, nearly 97% of the population of Valorn claims that Balthazar has personally and intentionally, at some point, come into their home/cave/tree/hole in the ground/tent, with the sole intent of slaughtering their entire family/clan/tribe/korungaball team/support group/posse, inexplicably leaving that one person as the sole survivor. The chances of the vast majority of these tales being true, however, are not high. Balthazar tends to let his massive, endless armies do most of this type of dirty work, and, due to his imposing figure, is unable to fit into most caves and tents anyway.
